<p>Die Mitglieder der Gattung <i>Mantamonas</i> sind <a href="Heterotroph" class="mw-redirect" title="Heterotroph">heterotrophe</a> <a href="Einzeller" title="Einzeller">einzellige</a> <a href="Protisten" title="Protisten">Protisten</a>. Die Zellen sind abgeflacht, relativ plastisch und asymmetrisch. Sie haben einen dünnes vorderes <a href="Flagellum" title="Flagellum">Flagellum</a> (Geißel) und ein auffällige hinteres Flagellum, mit dessen Hilfe sie gleiten. Die Zellen haben eine rechte Ausbuchtung, die wahrscheinlich durch den <a href="Zellkern" title="Zellkern">Zellkern</a> verursacht wird, und einen stumpfen Vorsprung auf der linken Seite. <p>Als <i>M. plastica</i> 2011 entdeckt wurde, ergab die phylogenetische Analyse auf Basis von <a href="SSU-rRNA" class="mw-redirect" title="SSU-rRNA">28S-</a> und <a href="LSU-rRNA" class="mw-redirect" title="LSU-rRNA">18S-rRNA</a>, dass es sich um eine mit den Ordnungen Apusomonadida<sup id="cite_ref-NCBI_2925400_14-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-NCBI_2925400-14"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>12<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und Planomonadida<sup id="cite_ref-NCBI_1294546_15-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-NCBI_1294546-15"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>13<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> eng verwandte Linie handelt.<sup id="cite_ref-Glücksman2010_3-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Glücksman2010-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Diese beiden Gruppen galten damals als Mitglieder der Apusozoa, die sich aber als <a href="Paraphyletisch" class="mw-redirect" title="Paraphyletisch">paraphyletisch</a> erwiesen.<sup id="cite_ref-16" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-16"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>A. 3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
Im Jahr 2018 ergab eine genauere phylogenomische Analyse, dass die Mantamonaden die Schwestergruppe einer Klade bilden, die Collodictyonidae<sup id="cite_ref-NCBI_190322_5-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-NCBI_190322-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und Rigifilida<sup id="cite_ref-NCBI_1237875_6-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-NCBI_1237875-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> umfasst.
